Introduction
New Zealand has announced plans to introduce a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa and expand eligibility for its Post Study Work Visa, aiming to support international graduates as they transition from education to employment.
The changes, announced by Immigration New Zealand on March 12, 2026, are intended to align international education with workforce needs while allowing graduates more time to find relevant employment after completing their studies.
For students planning to study abroad, these updates highlight how the country continues to adjust its policies to support graduates entering the job market.
Introduction of the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
A significant announcement made by the Minister of Immigration, Andrew Little, involved the introduction of a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa that is set to be implemented by late 2026.
This new visa enables eligible graduates from outside New Zealand to remain in New Zealand and work for up to six months. The purpose of this new visa is to allow graduates more time to search for employment in New Zealand and potentially gain an employer-sponsored work visa after this time.
During the short term time-frame, graduates will work with an employer on either an employment agreement or contract for services.
Eligibility Requirements for the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
To qualify for the new visa, international students must meet several requirements:
- Applicants must have completed a qualification at levels 5 to 7 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).
- The program must have been studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.
- The qualification must not be an English language, foundation, or bridging course.
- Applicants must show they have at least NZ$5,000 to support themselves.
- The application must be submitted within three months after the student visa expires.
However, there are some limitations. Visa holders will not be allowed to run their own business or sponsor partners and children for work or student visas while holding this visa.
Expansion of Post Study Work Visa Eligibility
Along with the new visa, the government also plans to expand eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa.
From late 2026, students who complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 in New Zealand will be eligible to apply for a Post Study Work Visa, provided they also hold a bachelor’s degree obtained either in New Zealand or overseas.
To apply through this pathway, students must:
- Complete the full duration of the Graduate Diploma program in New Zealand
- Provide their bachelor’s degree certificate and academic transcript as part of the visa application
Authorities have also clarified that an International Qualification Assessment will not be required for overseas bachelor’s degrees, although immigration officials may verify the authenticity of the qualification.
The Post Study Work Visa issued through this pathway will match the length of time spent studying the diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.
One-Time Post Study Work Visa Rule Remains
While eligibility is being expanded, the government confirmed that the existing rule allowing only one Post Study Work Visa per person will remain unchanged.
This means that even if a student completes another qualification at the same or a higher level later, they will not be eligible for a second Post Study Work Visa.
Unlike the short-term graduate visa, holders of the Post Study Work Visa may support partners and dependent children for visitor, work, or student visas if they meet immigration requirements.
Why These Changes Matter for International Students
These updates are part of efforts to strengthen the link between international education and employment opportunities. The new visa option will give graduates a short window to find employment, while the expanded eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa provides an additional pathway for some diploma graduates.
For students planning to study abroad, understanding such policy updates is essential before choosing a study destination.
